DIY – Pram Grab Bar/Rail

DIY – Pram Grab Bar/Rail

Mikey has a Hoggi Bingo pram which is specially designed to keep him in a great position to maintain good seated posture. It is very supportive and as far as disability prams go it’s pretty nice looking. One of the downfalls of the pram is it doesn’t come with a grab bar which in my opinion is super important. It helps kids learn to reach and grab and you can also attach toys to it to keep them entertained especially on long days at the hospital. The bar for this particular pram is an additional accessory which costs a whopping $185!

I came up with a simple work around using irrigation items that only cost me $11. This option definitely works with the current Hoggi Bingo model and may even work for some of the other disability prams on the market. This post may at least give you some inspiration to come up with something suitable for your pram if you have the same dilemma.

What you will need

13mm Poly Tube (sold in 1m pieces) x 1
19mm Poly Tube (sold in 1m pieces) x 1
13mm – 19mm Poly barbed joiner x 2 (connects small tube to big tube)
19mm Poly Barbed Elbow x 2 (corner pieces)

I purchased all items from the irrigation section at Bunnings for around $11, you will have a lot of tube left over.

The 13mm poly tube fits into the slots where you attach the pram’s tray table. Push the tube in firmly and decide on the height. This is best done with your child sitting in the pram.
Mark each piece of tube where it needs to be cut. Carefully use a Stanley knife to cut the pipe.
You will need 2 short pieces the same length of the 13mm tube for the sides, 1 piece of the 19mm tube for the bar and 2 more short pieces of 19mm tube to join the 13mm tube. See the below picture for more detail.
Put the cut tube into hot water, this helps you attach it to the elbow and joiner pieces more easily.

Benefits

  • Great for reaching practice
  • Great for grasping practice
  • Attach toys to keeps your child entertained
  • The bar pops out and swivels easily so you take your child in and out of their pram
  • The bar comes out easily so it can be stored away in the pram basket when not in use
  • Super easy and cheap to make

I cut out a piece of fur and attached some vecro to make a cover for Mikey’s bar. He enjoys exploring different textures. We normally also have some crinkly cellophane and a toy attached with ribbon.
